Gallagher Re has named Chulmin Jang (pictured above) as CEO of its operations in Korea. The appointment is part of the firm’s continued efforts to strengthen its leadership in key Asian markets.

Jang brings more than three decades of industry experience, primarily at Korean Re, where he held several senior leadership positions. Most recently, he served as executive managing director, overseeing key areas of the company’s reinsurance operations.

Jang began his career at Korean Re in December 1990 and remained with the company until June 2023, completing a tenure of over 32 years. His responsibilities during that period included reinsurance strategy, underwriting, and market development.

He holds a bachelor of business administration degree from Chung-Ang University, where he studied from 1984 to 1991.

As CEO of Gallagher Re Korea, Jang will oversee business strategy and client engagement for the firm’s reinsurance broking activities in the region. His role includes leading local market initiatives and aligning the Korea office’s operations with Gallagher Re’s broader regional and global objectives.

In conjunction with Jang’s appointment, Gallagher Re confirmed that current Korea CEO PhilWon Jeong will transition to the role of chairman. The leadership change is part of a planned succession process aimed at strengthening executive oversight and continuity as the firm advances its strategic agenda in the region.

The appointment also aligns with Gallagher Re’s broader expansion efforts across the Asia-Pacific region. The firm has made several senior hires in recent months in China, Hong Kong, and Indonesia, reflecting its intent to scale operations and improve service capabilities in high-growth markets.

Jang steps into the new role at a time when the Korean reinsurance market is experiencing a shift in competitive dynamics. The entry of new reinsurers and a reduction in large risk and catastrophe losses have intensified competition, particularly in property treaty lines.

Meanwhile, the reinsurance broker also named Sarah Maune as vice president within its life solutions team, bringing more than 16 years of experience in the life re/insurance sector.
