Chaucer Group has announced the appointment of David Smith (pictured above) as group head of claims, pending regulatory approval.
Smith will assume the role on Jan. 1 following the retirement of Tony Gates, who is stepping down after 35 years with the company.
Smith also has a 35-year tenure at Chaucer, having worked in both underwriting and claims. He has held positions as claims adjuster, deputy claims manager, and was named head of first party claims in 2016. Smith’s experience includes working closely with Gates throughout his career.
Richard Milner, CEO of Chaucer, thanked Gates for his service and leadership.
“I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Tony for his outstanding contributions over many years. He has been an exceptional leader of our multi-award-winning claims team and has played a pivotal role in their continued success,” Milner said.
He noted that Gates’ mentoring has enabled a smooth transition and expressed confidence in Smith’s ability to lead the claims division.
Gates reflected on his time at Chaucer and expressed support for Smith. “Having worked closely with him for some time, I know David is the right person to assume my role, and I wish him and Chaucer, the best for the future,” he said.
Chaucer has also expanded its capabilities in cyber risk management this year with the launch of Vanguard, a new solution designed for complex businesses. Vanguard offers coverage limits of up to US$15 million for cyber liability and US$30 million for cyber property damage, and is accompanied by a suite of partner services that provide proactive defense, rapid response, and recovery support.
In addition, Chaucer strengthened its international property division by appointing Emma Brown and Andy Cleair as class underwriters based in London. Both bring over 20 years of experience in the Lloyd’s and company markets, and will focus on supporting the growth of Chaucer’s international property portfolio and developing new business opportunities through broker networks.
