Howden Re is deepening its presence in Hong Kong’s reinsurance market with the appointment of industry veteran Candy Wong as head of treaty, following the recent launch of its local platform.
With her new position, Wong will oversee Howden Re’s Hong Kong office. Her responsibilities will include leading the treaty reinsurance proposition, developing technical capabilities, and providing market insight for clients based in Hong Kong.
“I am excited to join Howden Re at such an exciting time for its business in Asia Pacific,” said Wong.
Wong has worked in the reinsurance industry for more than 40 years. Half of that career has been spent in leadership positions in Hong Kong. She most recently served as managing director at Guy Carpenter following its merger with JLT Re, where she was responsible for growth initiatives and client development. Before that, she spent over three decades with Aon Re China Ltd., also serving as managing director.
Her new position builds on the establishment of Howden Re’s Hong Kong operations under managing director Roy Wong. “I look forward to working closely with Roy and the broader leadership team to help build a treaty proposition that reflects the needs and ambitions of Hong Kong clients,” Wong said.
“Candy is one of the most experienced and trusted professionals in the Hong Kong reinsurance market,” said Andy Souter, head of Asia Pacific, Howden Re International. “Her deep expertise, leadership credentials, and client insight make her a vital addition to our growing platform.
Souter noted Wong’s record in specialty and property and casualty lines, adding that her background will support the company’s strategy in the region.
“Together with the rest of the leadership team, she will support our growing reputation for client-focused excellence in the region,” he said.
The firm has also hired senior brokers Brian Chan and Karen Liu to add local expertise. Across Asia-Pacific, Howden Re has recently appointed John Philipsz as head of Australia and New Zealand and introduced a treaty offering in Taiwan led by Jimmy Tsai.
