Five major cricket associations across New Zealand have entered a three-year partnership with QBE Insurance, marking the first national collaboration of its kind in the country’s cricket landscape.

Auckland, Central Districts, Wellington, Canterbury and Otago cricket associations announced the partnership, which focuses on volunteers, junior cricket, and girls’ cricket programmes.

The agreement, which began this summer, represents QBE’s entry into New Zealand grassroots cricket after decades supporting sport in Australia.

“I’m really pleased about this partnership with QBE, which is built on a shared belief in the power of sport to positively shape the lives of children and young people, and to strengthen the communities around them,” said Todd Bryant, chief executive of Cricket Wellington.

Bryant said the partnership would help recognise volunteers while creating opportunities for young people.

“It’s also great to be working alongside the other major associations as part of this partnership, as that collective approach is ultimately good for the game,” he said.

The partnership aims to increase junior participation, recognise volunteers, and expand opportunities for girls in cricket.

Jonathan Groves, chief executive and managing director of QBE Pacific, said the company wanted to support grassroots cricket and foster inclusion.

“This partnership demonstrates QBE’s commitment to being at the heart of communities across New Zealand and supporting the next generation of cricketers,” Groves said.

He added the partnership aligned with QBE’s focus on supporting communities and businesses.

“Supporting communities and helping businesses thrive is at the heart of what we do,” Groves said. “By working with the major associations, we’re helping grow junior participation, recognise volunteers, and expand opportunities for girls so the game remains strong, inclusive, and reflective of communities for the future.”

QBE has sponsored the Sydney Swans AFL team for nearly 40 years and has supported Netball NSW Swifts for 18 years.

Activities under the New Zealand partnership began earlier this month and will continue over the next three years.

Bryant said the focus would be on building inclusive, community-led pathways.

“Working alongside QBE, our focus is on building inclusive, community-led pathways that ensure cricket remains accessible, welcoming, and meaningful for generations to come,” he said.
