Insurance Investment Solutions (IIS), an independently owned underwriting agency headquartered in Australia, has announced the appointment of Gert Stander as the new head of its New Zealand operations.
The move marks a step in the agency’s strategy to expand its footprint in the New Zealand market and enhance its service to brokers and intermediaries.
IIS specialises in providing strata, commercial, and community property insurance, working closely with brokers to deliver products tailored to complex real estate risks. Its model focuses on alternative distribution channels and building alliances to support the needs of the local insurance sector.
Stander brings close to 20 years of experience in insurance, having held a range of roles across underwriting, risk advisory, and business development.
Most recently, he served as senior business risk advisor at Medical Assurance Society (MAS), where he was responsible for advising members on risk management and insurance solutions.
His career also includes positions at BrokerWeb Risk Services, Donaldson Brown, Aon, Crombie Lockwood, Univision Financial Services, and Momentum.
Stander’s background covers senior management, claims management, and relationship development.
He has worked with both mutual and corporate insurers, as well as broking firms, giving him a comprehensive understanding of the New Zealand insurance market.
His expertise spans general and commercial insurance, liability, and strategic planning.
Commenting on his appointment, Stander said the new role represents a significant point in his professional journey.
“Today marks a full-circle moment as I officially step into the role of head of NZ operations for Insurance Investment Solutions Pty Ltd (IIS NZ) – a leading MGA with a strong legacy in the Australian market, now expanding its footprint into New Zealand,” he said in on a LinkedIn post.
He also acknowledged the contributions of Peg Reuben – who brings decades of experience to the agency – and emphasised the company’s commitment to supporting the New Zealand insurance sector.
“There’s something incredibly special about seeing a Kiwi like Peg bring over 25 years of expertise and a highly regarded MGA business back to her roots – a true example of giving back to the New Zealand insurance landscape,” Stander said.
The expansion of IIS into New Zealand is part of a broader effort to adapt its offerings to local market requirements, drawing on its experience in Australia.
The agency aims to deliver products and services that address the specific needs of New Zealand brokers and their clients, with a focus on efficient underwriting and distribution.
Stander’s initial focus will be on engaging with the broker network and establishing a solid foundation for IIS’s operations in the country.
“To my broker network – I’m looking forward to reconnecting with each of you soon. I can’t wait to introduce you to the unique offering IIS brings to New Zealand and how we plan to add real value to the market,” Stander said.
