Katherine Wilson has been named the incoming chief executive of the Insurance Brokers Association of New Zealand (IBANZ), with her appointment set to take effect on Sept. 8.

Wilson will leave her current role as Head of Advocacy at the Property Council of New Zealand to lead the national body representing insurance brokers. She succeeds Mel Gorham, who left the organisation last month after a five-year tenure.

“I’m excited to be the voice for insurance brokers across New Zealand and look forward to connecting with members and working collaboratively to strengthen and support our industry,” Wilson said.

She brings to IBANZ a background in public policy and advocacy, having led national and regional campaigns on issues including seismic risk, resource consenting, regulatory levies, and the Future of Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) funding arrangements. She holds a law degree from Otago University and an arts degree in politics from Auckland University.

The IBANZ board cited Wilson’s experience in government relations and membership-based organisations as key factors behind her selection.

“These are complex and challenging times for the insurance industry and Katherine has the right mix of government relations and advocacy experience, strategic thinking and leadership skills to take our organisation forward,” said IBANZ acting president Sam Kerr.
