IAG New Zealand has introduced a new Māori artwork, Ruaitewānanga, as part of its updated visual identity.

The initiative is designed to reflect the insurer’s ongoing engagement with Te Ao Māori, the Māori worldview, and forms a component of its broader Māori strategy, He Rautaki Māori.

Māori principles guide new identity

Ruaitewānanga, created by artist Randal Leach (Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Konohi), symbolises five interconnected principles that underpin IAG New Zealand’s approach to Māori engagement:

  • Te Pae Tawhiti (intergenerational thinking)
  • Whanaungatanga (kinship)
  • Manaakitanga (reciprocity)
  • Kaitiakitanga (guardianship)
  • Rangatiratanga (leadership)

These principles are intended to guide the company’s cultural direction and inform its business practices.

Lavinia Taylor, Māori engagement manager at IAG New Zealand, said the new artwork serves as a tangible representation of the company’s evolving relationship with Māori culture.

“Ruaitewānanga is a visual reflection of the values that foster our culture at IAG. It reflects our collective journey and deepening understanding of Te Ao Māori, and it will help guide us as we continue to build our culture of inclusion, respect, and belonging,” she said.

Staff engagement and ceremony

The unveiling of Ruaitewānanga took place at IAG’s Fanshawe Street office in Auckland, beginning with a dawn blessing (karakia) led by descendants of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei.

The event included a pōwhiri (welcome ceremony), an educational session on the significance of the artwork, and a waiata (song) composed for IAG by Matua Tapeta of Te Wehi Haka. Employees also participated in a hākari (feast) to mark the occasion.

Taylor noted that the new visual identity is part of IAG’s commitment to honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi and integrating tikanga Māori values into its organisational culture.

Financial results and market presence

IAG New Zealand is the largest general insurer in the country, operating under brands such as AMI, State, NZI, NAC, Lumley, and Lantern, and providing general insurance products through ASB, BNZ, Westpac, and The Co-operative Bank. The company employs over 4,000 staff and insures more than NZ$1 trillion in assets.

In its FY25 financial results, IAG New Zealand reported an insurance profit of AU$606 million, an increase from AU$457 million the previous year. The insurance margin rose to 27.4%, up from 22.5% in FY24, with the company attributing the improvement to a reduction in natural disaster costs.

“New Zealand is highly exposed to natural hazards and weather-related disasters and their growing impacts,” said Amanda Whiting, CEO of IAG New Zealand. “We must remain financially strong to be able to pay claims and help our customers recover from the next big event, and today’s results help us do this.”
