Allianz expands telemedicine service for Canadian travellers

Allianz Global Assistance Canada has launched an expanded telemedicine service that allows insured travellers in more than 80 countries to quickly book virtual or in-person medical care.

Developed in partnership with digital health platform Air Doctor, the initiative aims to make access to treatment abroad faster and less complicated, while cutting down on the financial and administrative hurdles that can accompany medical claims.

Customers with eligible travel medical insurance will receive details by email before departure, including a link to a co-branded Allianz-Air Doctor website and app. Non-emergency cases can be scheduled for virtual or in-person consultations, including with multilingual doctors, with local prescriptions arranged where available.

The service is designed to eliminate paperwork and upfront payments. Insured travellers can book up to two doctor visits per trip without pre-approvals or out-of-pocket costs, which Allianz said will allow customers to focus on recovery rather than claims processing.

The partnership with Air Doctor also reflects a broader trend in the travel insurance sector, where providers are increasingly turning to digital health tools to enhance customer experience.

Insurers are facing rising claims costs tied to medical inflation and renewed demand for international travel. By offering frictionless access to care, Allianz is positioning itself to retain customers in a competitive market where convenience and service quality are becoming as important as price or coverage limits.

Industry observers noted that telemedicine and app-based medical assistance are likely to become standard features in travel insurance packages. This shift could put pressure on competitors to accelerate similar integrations or risk losing market share to providers that can combine financial protection with real-time medical guidance.

By expanding its virtual care network, Allianz is signalling that assistance services are not just an add-on but a central component of travel insurance.
