Acera Insurance Services Ltd. has welcomed Edmonton-based Merit Insurance Services Ltd. as its newest partner, strengthening its footprint in Alberta's capital city.

Together, the two firms bring more than a century of presence in Edmonton's insurance market.

Lee Rogers (pictured above), chief executive officer of Acera Insurance, said the partnership reflects the enduring appeal of independent brokerages that put client interests first. He added that Acera's support would allow Merit to expand its offerings while preserving its independence and Canadian ownership.

Merit Insurance, founded in 1985, has traditionally focused on home and auto insurance. By aligning with Acera, it plans to broaden its portfolio to include commercial insurance and employee group benefits, while maintaining its long-standing focus on customer service.

President Greg Hyland emphasized that the move ensures clients continue to receive impartial advice through a locally rooted brokerage model.

The transaction, which closed on September 1, 2025, also highlighted how Alberta's brokerage market continues to consolidate. Large players such as BrokerLink and Westland Insurance are setting the pace, with BrokerLink adding about $491 million in premiums from 25 acquisitions in 2024, taking its total written premiums to $4.3 billion.

BrokerLink has targeted $5 billion in premium volume by the end of 2025. Westland Insurance, meanwhile, is trading more than $4 billion in premiums nationally and has expanded its Alberta presence through acquisitions such as Forefront Insurance.

Compared with those national players, the Acera-Merit deal is smaller in scale, but strategically it follows the same consolidation trend of expanding geographic reach, enhancing distribution and diversifying product offerings. In Alberta, where Westland and BrokerLink have been active, maintaining competitive, independent options remains a key differentiator for Acera.

By combining resources, Acera and Merit aim to strengthen their ability to serve clients in both personal and commercial markets, while retaining the independence and community presence that have long defined both firms.
