Canadian insurers are increasingly integrating health and wellness into their insurance offerings, using programs that incentivize prevention and improve long-term outcomes. Two recent initiatives from Manulife and Sun Life illustrate how insurers are evolving to meet these needs.

Manulife Vitality program enhancements

Manulife is expanding its Vitality program to make it more accessible and engaging for Canadians.

The program, available exclusively with eligible life insurance policies, rewards members for everyday healthy actions such as physical activity, nutrition, and preventive screenings. Recent updates include new prevention partners, expanded activity recognition, and more personalized ways to earn points, strengthening the link between healthier behavior and insurance benefits.

Manulife Vitality now incorporates partnerships with providers including Cronometer (nutrition tracking), KixCare (virtual pediatric care), NiaHealth (advanced biomarker testing), and Personalized Prescribing Inc. (pharmacogenetic guidance). Additionally, GRAIL’s Galleri® multi-cancer early detection test is offered at preferred pricing for eligible Vitality Plus members aged 50+, marking a significant integration of preventive healthcare into the insurance experience.

The enhancements allow insurers to better manage risk by encouraging healthier behaviors, reducing potential claims over time, and differentiating their products in a competitive life insurance market.

Data from existing members shows measurable improvements in cholesterol, blood pressure, BMI, and glucose levels, highlighting the potential for insurance-linked wellness programs to support population health.

Sun Life Virtual Healthcare program for underserved communities

Sun Life is addressing gaps in healthcare access through a partnership with Dialogue, offering virtual care to over 10,000 participants in underserved Canadian communities.

The program provides no-cost access to medical and wellness services and is complemented by $500,000 in funding for community-led initiatives on nutrition, physical activity, and financial literacy.

For insurers, initiatives like this align with long-term risk mitigation and social responsibility goals, potentially reducing future claims by supporting preventative care and improving overall population health.

Sun Life’s approach demonstrates how insurers can integrate health interventions and philanthropic programs to reinforce customer relationships while addressing systemic healthcare challenges.
