Stephanie Greer (pictured) will become president and CEO of Assuris on May 20, succeeding Paul Petrelli, who is retiring after five years with the organization.

The Assuris board of directors announced Greer’s appointment earlier this week. Greer brings more than a decade of experience in insurance risk management and policyholder protection to the role, with expertise in solvency risk, resolution preparedness, and regulatory collaboration. At Assuris, where she currently serves as executive vice president, she has led the organization’s readiness for the resolution of member companies and advanced early risk identification and consumer awareness initiatives.

Before joining Assuris, she spent 15 years in the life insurance industry, working in consulting and at a large Canadian multinational life and health insurer. She holds the Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries designations.

Frank Swedlove, chair of the Assuris Board of Directors, said Greer would guide the organization through its next phase of development.

“Ms. Greer brings the leadership, experience and skills needed to guide Assuris into the next stage of its evolution, including tackling the increasingly complex and pressing issues surrounding resolution planning in the life and health insurance industry in Canada today,” Swedlove said in a statement.

The board also recognised Petrelli’s contributions during his tenure. Under his leadership, Assuris reorganized its structure, expanded its expertise and capabilities, and took on resolution planning responsibilities. The organization also increased consumer protection levels and strengthened international connections.

Petrelli served as chair of the International Forum of Insurance Guarantee Schemes, expanding Assuris’s linkages with similar organizations worldwide.

“On behalf of the board, I would like to sincerely thank Mr. Petrelli for his outstanding leadership and dedication to Assuris for the past five years,” Swedlove said. “We are grateful for his many contributions and wish him all the best in his retirement.”

Greer acknowledged the foundation established by her predecessor.

“I am honoured to accept the appointment and to build on the strong foundation established by Mr. Petrelli,” Greer said. “I look forward to working with the board, management and our stakeholders to continue advancing our commitment to protect policyholders as the lead organization for insurance resolution in Canada.”

Assuris is an independent, industry-funded compensation organization designated by the federal Minister of Finance under the Insurance Companies Act of Canada.
