Markel Insurance, the insurance operations within Markel Group, has named Alain Paris as vice president, product line leader – primary casualty, effective immediately.
In his new role, Paris will be responsible for overseeing the primary casualty product line nationwide, working closely with technical and field underwriting teams to ensure alignment between market execution and Markel’s strategic direction. The position is central to the company’s underwriting framework, balancing sustainable growth with profitability targets in a competitive market.
The appointment comes at a time when the Canadian casualty market is facing shifting dynamics. Insurers have been navigating a period of rising liability exposures, particularly in areas such as construction, manufacturing and environmental services.
Social inflation and an uptick in severity of liability claims have also placed pressure on underwriting results, prompting carriers to refine appetite and strengthen risk selection. For many, the casualty segment is becoming a key battleground where product expertise and tailored solutions are essential to maintaining a competitive edge.
Paris brings more than 20 years of commercial underwriting experience, with a background spanning general liability, product liability, umbrella and excess coverage and specialty risks, such as abuse liability, a line where Markel has positioned itself as a leader in Canada.
Most recently, Paris served as AVP middle market casualty at Berkeley Canada, where he helped drive profitable portfolio growth through targeted strategy and disciplined underwriting.
Markel Canada executives described his appointment as a critical step in building momentum and enhancing the company’s casualty offering. They underscored that sustainable underwriting practices and strong broker partnerships remain central to Markel’s expansion strategy.
The move signals Markel’s intent to strengthen its presence in a segment where businesses across Canada face evolving risks and increasingly complex liability challenges. With market conditions tightening and demand for specialist solutions growing, the addition of Paris to Markel’s leadership team positions the insurer to compete more aggressively in Canada’s casualty space.
