The Insurance Institute of Canada’s Insurance Career Connections division is now accepting applications for its spring 2026 IGNITE Insurance Careers Program, aimed at job seekers looking to transition into roles in the property and casualty (P&C) insurance sector.
IGNITE is designed to introduce pathways into insurance for internationally trained professionals, career changers and newcomers to Canada. Participants do not need prior work experience in the insurance industry to enroll.
Candidates must first register for a virtual IGNITE information session, which is followed by a final assessment. Information sessions and assessments are being conducted online until April 2.
The spring 2026 IGNITE program will run from April 15 to May 13 in a hybrid format, combining online modules with in‑person classes at the Insurance Institute’s office in Toronto. A fee of $85 covers the full program cost and course materials.
The curriculum focuses on three core areas: essential job‑search skills such as résumé and interview preparation; foundational insurance industry knowledge; and networking opportunities with employers across the P&C market.
“IGNITE is one of many career development initiatives that Insurance Career Connections leads throughout the year to help fill the talent gap in p&c insurance,” said Peter Hohman, president and CEO of The Insurance Institute of Canada. “This program provides opportunities for potential job seekers to attend sessions, make connections, and begin putting serious thought into transitioning towards a new, rewarding career in insurance.”
IGNITE is one response to a broader, structural talent challenge in the insurance industry. Industry analysis showed the Canadian market is dealing with a shortage of skilled professionals, particularly in commercial lines, at the same time as risks become more complex and clients expect faster, more tailored service.
Research on broker and carrier priorities highlights several pressure points that programs like IGNITE are intended to address. Firms are focused on speed and efficiency, niche and specialty expertise, and more proactive risk management advice, but say they are constrained by limited capacity and difficulty attracting and retaining qualified staff.
Digital transformation is another factor. While demand for portal‑ready products, automation and streamlined renewals is high, many organizations continue to wrestle with legacy systems and a lack of tech‑savvy talent. That has created a premium on recruits who can bridge underwriting or claims knowledge with comfort around data, analytics and digital tools - precisely the kind of cross‑functional capability entry programs are beginning to emphasize.
Launched in 2024, earlier IGNITE cohorts have been run in Toronto, Calgary and Kitchener. As the spring 2026 intake opens, the initiative is increasingly being viewed by employers as part of a wider ecosystem of talent pipelines - from college programs to mid‑career reskilling - that will be needed to sustain growth and service levels in Canada’s P&C market over the coming decade.
