HUB International has named Matthew Studley (pictured) as president of its Ontario and Atlantic regions, succeeding long-time regional leader Susan Murphy as she retires.
In his new role, Studley will oversee HUB's operations across Ontario and the Atlantic provinces. He will be responsible for advancing HUB's commitment to delivering innovative insurance and risk management solutions to clients across the region.
"Matt’s appointment is a testament to HUB’s commitment to developing and promoting exceptional talent from within our organization,” said Tina Osen, president of HUB Canada. “Throughout his tenure with HUB, Matt has consistently demonstrated the expertise, leadership and client-focused approach that defines our culture. His deep understanding of our business, clients and markets makes him the ideal leader to guide our Ontario and Atlantic regions forward.”
Studley brings deep experience in financial risk management, executive liability and specialty risk mitigation to the role. Most recently, he served as chief operating officer for HUB Ontario & Atlantic, overseeing all commercial insurance, employee benefits and investment counselling divisions.
The promotion comes at a pivotal time for Eastern Canada’s insurance market. Ontario remains the country’s largest province by premium, with a vast personal lines book and a dense concentration of complex commercial risks across financial services, manufacturing, construction, real estate, infrastructure, tech and public entities. The Atlantic provinces, while smaller in volume, are experiencing steady growth in sectors such as ports, energy, fisheries and tourism, and are increasingly exposed to severe weather and flood risk, raising the bar on property, casualty and resilience solutions.
Against this backdrop, brokers are facing sustained pressure on property capacity and pricing, heightened expectations for data‑driven risk advisory, and fierce competition for mid‑market and large corporate accounts. Consolidation is reshaping distribution as national and global brokers vie for specialist talent and regional agencies, while regulators and investors continue to intensify scrutiny on governance, disclosure and risk management, particularly for listed companies and financial institutions.
Studley’s background is closely aligned with those demands. Before becoming COO, he led HUB’s Complex Risk division and its Public D&O and Financial Institutions practice, giving him frontline exposure to some of the most technical and litigation‑sensitive segments of the market.
Earlier in his career, he worked at one of Canada’s largest asset management firms as an investment analyst serving retail and institutional clients, building a strong understanding of capital markets and governance risk.
