HDI Global Canada is expanding its Sports, Entertainment & Contingency (SE&C) portfolio with the launch of a dedicated Sports insurance product tailored to national and provincial organizations, clubs, teams and sports professionals.
The move comes as the sports insurance market in Canada continues to grow, driven by increased participation, higher liability awareness and the need for financial resilience among community and professional programs.
The new Sports product offers broad protection across Commercial General Liability, Abuse Liability, Property, and equipment coverage for travelling teams. It aims to help sports organisations address the rising costs and risks associated with injuries, misconduct claims, and event disruptions that have become more complex in recent years due to heightened scrutiny around athlete welfare and organizational governance.
To complement this coverage, HDI has added Legal Expense Insurance (LEI) to the package, providing coaches and trainers with access to legal support in the event of disputes, disciplinary actions, or liability claims. The inclusion of LEI is a notable response to the growing legal exposure faced by sports professionals and volunteers across amateur and competitive levels.
Michael McDermott, head of Sports, Entertainment & Contingency at HDI Global Canada, said the product is designed not only to provide financial protection but to ensure continuity of operations for organisations impacted by unexpected legal or financial setbacks. He noted that the aim is to enable teams and associations to continue their programs even amid challenging circumstances.
Klaus Navarrete, managing director and chief agent of HDI Global Canada, said the launch reflects the insurer’s focus on adapting to market needs and strengthening its role as a trusted partner for Canada’s sports sector.
The introduction of this product is expected to bolster HDI’s position in the growing sports and recreation insurance segment, which has seen increasing competition among specialty insurers.
As sports bodies and community clubs place greater emphasis on compliance and risk management, HDI’s comprehensive approach could attract organisations seeking a single, scalable solution that aligns with both national standards and grassroots needs.
