Echelon Insurance has named Jatinder Bassi as its next president, succeeding Robin Joshua, who will retire after leading the specialty insurer through a period of growth and transition.
The move comes as Echelon looks to expand its footprint in underserved segments of the Canadian commercial insurance market.
Bassi has nearly two decades of experience across insurance and financial services. He is also a former president of the Canadian Insurance Accountants Association, where he worked to advance industry knowledge and strengthen engagement within the sector.
Since 2019, Echelon, a subsidiary of CAA Club Group, has sharpened its focus on specialty commercial insurance. The company has invested in niche expertise and broker partnerships to meet the needs of clients that may not fit standard underwriting appetites.
Market analysts noted that competition in Canada's commercial lines sector remains strong, with capacity and underwriting performance creating favorable terms for many clients. However, specialty insurers continue to provide an outlet for risks that mainstream carriers are less inclined to take on, or that require customized solutions.
For brokers, the rise of specialty providers offers more choice in a market where coverage for complex or non-standard exposures can be limited. With the frequency of catastrophic weather events and emerging liability risks adding further complexity, specialty insurers are playing an increasingly important role in helping businesses secure tailored protection.
Echelon said the leadership transition will take effect in the coming year. Bassi emphasized that he will continue building on the company’s foundation by working closely with brokers and clients to deliver specialty insurance and risk management solutions aligned with evolving customer needs.
