Brokerage giant Aon has launched a specialized insurance programme designed to cover data centre projects from construction through to operational readiness, as surging investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure creates increasingly complex risk profiles.

The Data Center Lifecycle Insurance Programme (DCLP) provides up to US$1.5bn (£1.2bn) in coverage for construction risks, operational property damage and business interruption under a single integrated facility. A news release noted that the programme also includes up to US$400m in construction cyber physical damage protection and US$500m in project cargo and transport insurance.

“Today’s data centres are the backbone of the global economy,” said James MacNeal, global industry specialty leader of construction and infrastructure for Aon. “Our Data Centre Lifecycle Insurance Program empowers clients to make better decisions, moving faster and more confidently, with protection that evolves alongside strategic assets, from physical infrastructure to digital operations.

The programme aims to address the growing complexity of data centre projects driven by artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and rising demand for computing capacity. By consolidating traditionally fragmented coverage across multiple lines of business, DCLP aims to reduce procurement friction and accelerate project timelines.

The facility integrates advanced risk engineering and cyber impact modelling through Aon’s global risk consulting team, helping clients anticipate and respond to emerging threats across both physical and digital domains.

Third-party liability coverage extends up to $100m, excluding US exposures, while the programme includes both construction non-damage cyber protection and operational cyber coverage with technology errors and omissions insurance.

“Data centres are no longer just physical assets, they are platforms for innovation, connectivity and economic growth,” said Brian Hearst, managing director of construction for Aon. “DCLP reflects our commitment to helping clients shape better decisions, protect what matters most and build enduring infrastructure for a more digital world.”

The company highlighted that the launch forms part of Aon’s 3x3 Plan, combining the firm’s global expertise, carrier relationships, and analytics infrastructure to address interconnected challenges facing clients across more than 120 countries.
