Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) is extending the validity of auto insurance documents and related services for residents affected by wildfire evacuation orders to support those who may face barriers to renewing coverage while displaced, CBC has reported.

In a statement issued Saturday, the Crown corporation said that insurance policies, along with driver’s licenses, vehicle registrations and identification cards set to expire on or after May 23 and before Sept. 1, will be considered valid until the end of September for customers under evacuation. This is to ensure continued access to insurance coverage and vehicle use during emergency situations.

MPI noted that evacuees are encouraged to check the expiry dates on their documents and renew them if they are able. However, the agency acknowledged that evacuations may prevent timely renewals, especially in northern or remote areas where access to service centres may be limited, according to the report.

By extending the validity period, MPI said it aims to ensure that affected individuals remain legally insured and in compliance with provincial requirements while displaced from their homes.

Renewal notices will continue to be issued through Canada Post. MPI also cautioned that postal service interruptions in wildfire-affected areas could delay mail delivery. Customers who are unable to receive their notices or access online or in-person services are encouraged to contact MPI directly for assistance.

The extension follows evacuation orders in several northern Manitoba communities due to ongoing wildfire activity. Thousands of residents have been temporarily relocated, prompting public agencies to adjust service delivery to accommodate the disruption, the report said.

MPI said it will continue to monitor the wildfire situation and work with emergency management officials to determine if further extensions or adjustments are necessary. The insurer added that any updates to service policies or deadlines will be communicated through its website and customer service channels.
