As Canadians hit the roads this summer, insurance regulators and investigators warned that organized crime groups are targeting drivers with increasingly sophisticated schemes.

Équité Association, which investigates and prevents insurance fraud, launched its “Fraud Never Takes a Vacation” campaign to raise public awareness and provide tools to protect consumers.

The company said insurance crime is organized, calculated and often devastating for real people. The association also noted that criminal networks are increasingly targeting everyday Canadians and emphasized that the insurance industry is working together to protect communities, prevent crime and stop fraud before it starts.

The campaign highlighted three areas of concern for summer drivers. Re-VIN fraud, where stolen vehicles are given new vehicle identification numbers and resold, continues to surface across the country.

Rental car scams, including theft through false identities, are another growing problem. Staged collisions, designed to trigger exaggerated injury or damage claims, also impose a financial burden on both insurers and policyholders.

Équité is distributing fraud-prevention guidance through its website and LinkedIn page, while also briefing brokers, agents, and other front-line insurance professionals on emerging trends. Industry estimates suggest that insurance fraud costs Canadians more than $1 billion annually, a figure that ultimately drives up premiums for all policyholders.

The association advised drivers to remain vigilant by verifying vehicle identification numbers when buying or renting cars, keeping thorough records of rental agreements, and reporting suspicious behaviour or accidents to authorities and insurers promptly. Insurance professionals were encouraged to stay informed of emerging fraud tactics, maintain clear documentation, and educate clients about potential risks.

With summer travel increasing exposure to these scams, Équité’s campaign emphasizes vigilance. By educating drivers and reinforcing the role of front-line insurance professionals, the association aims to reduce losses, protect communities, and maintain the integrity of Canada’s insurance system.
