What more should the industry do to stop violence against women?

Insurance broker Stands Up to combat domestic violence

Non-Profits & Charities

Anthony White, head of property and construction at domo insurance, has earned a spot among You Matter’s Top 8 in the charity's Stand Up in September campaign. The annual distinction honours eight men from different industries who lead efforts to address family violence. White hopes more brokers and insurers take their own proactive steps to deal with this critical issue and help end the violence against women that can destroy communities.

As a father, Melbourne-based White said much of his motivation to get involved came from the hope that his little girl can grow up in a less violent world. “Everyone deserves a world that’s safe, free from violence and filled with love,” said the broker. “The thought of her growing up in today’s world is frightening,” said White.

An ongoing record of involvement with You Matter

White told IB that he is continuing his firm’s strong record of involvement as a sponsor and supporter of the charity. The firm’s CEO made the Top 8 in last year’s campaign and the COO has also “contributed significantly.”

“For me, getting involved this year felt like a natural extension of that connection,” he said.

He also said the firm he works for believes that companies have a responsibility to go beyond their business function and support causes that address urgent community issues like family violence.  “It is about recognising that safety, wellbeing and community are fundamental to people’s lives,” said White.

Shining a light on a critical issue

White said being involved with You Matter is a meaningful way to raise awareness and be part of the solution to family violence. “It allows us to use our platform in the industry to shine a light on an issue that cannot be ignored,” he said.

White said he is engaging in “practical and positive actions” that align with what You Matter is doing. He said these include supporting programs that help women and children settle into safe homes, ensuring their long‑term accommodation is equipped and comfortable and partnering with agencies who work directly with those impacted by family violence.

“It also means speaking up in my networks, making sure our business operates with empathy and encouraging others to get involved by pledging online, starting conversations in workplaces and sporting clubs, and making donations,” he said.

White said these actions can help reduce barriers and provide meaningful support to those in need. “Ultimately, my goal is to help create a safer and more supportive environment for those affected by family violence,” he said.

White called on other insurance firms to join in and support the cause through donations but also by supporting hands on opportunities for staff to contribute in person. “These organisations do not receive government funding, so community support is vital,” he said.

Insurance firms, White said, can also use their communication channels to promote awareness of support services and should ensure their policies and customer service are approached with compassion so that people feel safe and supported.

He emphasized that the follow through is what really makes the difference. “Watching what You Matter does through creating Havens of Hope, working with volunteers, and ensuring homes are comfortable and welcoming shows what meaningful support looks like,” he said.

White said he hopes his firm continues to expand its contribution to You Matter. “I encourage others in the industry to do the same by moving from talk to action.”
