The TAL Community Foundation has commemorated its 10th year of operations by distributing $100,000 in grants to its partner organisations, marking a checkpoint in a philanthropic initiative that has channelled over $8 million to community programs since 2015.

The foundation was established to expand TAL Limited’s community engagement through employee participation, organisational partnerships, and direct investment in community programming. The anniversary grant distribution represents the foundation’s approach to supporting organisations that deliver measurable community outcomes across Australia.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) received $40,000 from the anniversary allocation, with the remaining amount divided among three additional partners:

  • Australian Business and Community Network (ABCN): $20,000
  • National Aboriginal Sporting Chance Academy (NASCA): $20,000
  • SANE: $20,000.

RFDS program expansion in remote communities

The RFDS will apply its $40,000 grant allocation toward expanding the Guiding Rural Outback Wellbeing (GROW) program, which provides training in sustainable food cultivation to children in geographically isolated regions. Josh Bamford, corporate partnerships manager at RFDS, articulated the program’s orientation. “GROW’s mission is to build more connected and resilient communities. Through the support of the GROW Aquaponics Program, NSW communities will build confidence and learn practical skills with sustainable food production, STEM outcomes, and a holistic wellbeing approach,” Bamford said.

Volunteer engagement and organisational partnerships

The foundation has accumulated 21,000 documented volunteer hours from TAL employees engaged with partner organisations. This workforce participation has manifested through mentorship arrangements, fundraising campaigns, and aligned giving mechanisms. The foundation has directed resources to 137 separate charities identified through employee selection, generating $1.8 million through combined employee fundraising and institutional matching.

According to Alex Homer, TAL chief customer & brand officer and Community Foundation chair, the decade-long operational period has demonstrated the foundation’s partnership methodology. “Ten years ago, we committed to extending TAL’s community impact by supporting organisations and initiatives making a real difference all over Australia. Whilst we’re proud of what we’ve achieved with our partners and TAL people so far, there’s more work ahead. Our 10-year anniversary marks a renewed commitment to continue this important work,” Homer said.

The ABCN, operating as the foundation’s longest-standing partner since inception, has recruited more than 1,000 TAL employees as mentors to students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The organisation focuses on workforce preparation for young Australians entering employment.

Insurance claims trends and customer support

Beyond foundation activities, TAL processed $4.7 billion in claims for 54,000 customers and their dependents during the financial year concluded March 31, 2025, representing weekly disbursements averaging $90 million. Living insurance products, comprising income protection, critical illness, and permanent disability coverage, accounted for 74% of total claims paid.

Mental health conditions constituted the primary claims category at 21%, with cancer diagnoses representing 17% and musculoskeletal injuries accounting for 15%. The consistency of mental health claims at the leading position reflected a fourth consecutive year of this pattern.

Georgina Croft, chief claims officer at TAL, emphasised the individualised nature of claims processing. “While these numbers are significant, our focus is the people they represent – Australians recovering from an illness or injury or dealing with loss. Each claim is a person, a family and a life impacted,” she said.
