Coalition has appointed Trent Nihill (pictured) as general manager for its Australian operations, marking a significant step in the company’s ongoing expansion in the local cyber insurance market.

Nihill’s appointment comes as Coalition pursues a strategy to strengthen its leadership team and enhance its service offerings for Australian policyholders.

Leadership transition and company direction

Nihill brings nearly 15 years of experience in cyber and financial lines insurance to the role, having previously led underwriting teams and managed portfolios for major global insurers in Australia. His expertise spans cyber, professional indemnity, and directors and officers (D&O) coverage.

Nihill stated that Coalition has established a strong presence in Australia over the past two years.

“I’m looking forward to continuing to drive our mission of protecting the unprotected and fundamentally changing how organisations manage cyber risk,” he said.

He emphasised Coalition’s approach of combining technology and real-time cybersecurity insights with insurance practices to address digital threats.

“Coalition is actively helping policyholders by combining superior technology and real-time cybersecurity insights with insurance best practices. I’m excited to lead the team here in Australia and drive a more active era of cyber insurance for Australian businesses,” Nihill said.

Kyle Bryant, head of international at Coalition, said that Nihill’s background and market knowledge are expected to support the company’s growth objectives in Australia.

“Trent’s performance in launching and growing our underwriting operation has been exceptional,” he said. “He has the strategic vision and deep market experience needed to scale Coalition to the next level in Australia.”

Introduction of local incident response services

Coinciding with Nihill’s appointment, Coalition has launched an Australian-based incident response unit, Coalition Incident Response (CIR), to provide direct support to policyholders facing cyber incidents.

Praneil Kumar has been named to lead this division, bringing over a decade of experience in cybersecurity consulting, digital forensics, and incident response.

Kumar’s responsibilities include assisting clients from the initial containment of cyber events through to recovery.

CIR’s services include negotiating with threat actors, deploying forensic tools, and working with cybersecurity vendors to help limit data loss and financial impact.

Focus on distribution and broker engagement

Coalition has also named Connor McKay as head of business development for Australia.

McKay, who joined the company in 2023, will oversee a state-based distribution strategy and broker engagement, supported by business development staff in Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne, and Sydney.

His previous experience includes business development and underwriting roles at other insurance firms.

This distribution model is intended to improve local market understanding and strengthen relationships with brokers.

McKay indicated that a key focus will be collaborating with regional business development leads and broker partners to extend Coalition’s reach.

“We’ve built such a strong foundation since launching in Australia, now serving more than 5,000 customers and working with more than 1,000 quoting brokers,” he said.
