After four decades at Barry Nilsson, head of insurance and health Rhett Kennedy (pictured) will retire as principal at the end of 2025, concluding a career that has shaped the firm’s insurance practice and leadership structure.
A succession plan is already in place, with principal Jordan Farr and special counsel Gillian Sheppard set to lead the Queensland financial lines team following Kennedy’s departure.
“As I prepare to leave the firm, I retire knowing it is in the best shape it has ever been, and I have the utmost confidence in the team who will step forward in my place. While I am retiring as principal, I look forward to continuing my association with the firm in a consulting capacity from next year,” Kennedy said.
Kennedy joined the firm in 1985 as a newly admitted solicitor in general litigation before spearheading the development of its insurance division – now the largest in Barry Nilsson’s portfolio. Over the years, he took on several leadership roles, including serving as the firm’s inaugural chair of the board of management in 2020, where he guided it through structural reforms and the challenges brought by the pandemic.
Under his direction, Barry Nilsson expanded nationally, introduced a refreshed governance model, and strengthened relationships with key insurance clients. Kennedy also worked closely with the leadership team to launch a renewed brand and implement long-term strategies.
In his role as chairperson, Kennedy was a key advocate for responsible business initiatives. He oversaw the firm’s 2026 Diversity and Inclusion strategy, its Impact Project milestones, and efforts that saw the firm surpass the National Pro Bono Target.
Barry Nilsson chairperson Peter Murdoch said Kennedy’s contribution extended beyond the insurance practice.
“Known for his high level of professionalism, his commitment to his clients and his depth of knowledge, Rhett has been an outstanding leader for the firm. He has played an instrumental role in strengthening the firm’s position as a leading national law firm and has contributed deeply to the development of the culture and values of the firm throughout his tenure,” Murdoch said.
“As we look ahead to Barry Nilsson’s bright future and continued focus on growth under our 2026-2028 strategic plan, we thank Rhett for his deep commitment to set the firm up for ongoing success.”
