The National Insurance Brokers Association has welcomed the appointment of Sarah Court as the next chair of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), signalling its intention to engage with her on regulatory and policy issues affecting the insurance broking sector.

NIBA chief executive Richard Klipin said the association saw common ground between ASIC’s regulatory focus and the work of insurance brokers, particularly in relation to consumer and small business access to insurance.

“NIBA shares ASIC's focus on ensuring consumers and small businesses can access insurance that meets their needs, understand their policies, and secure coverage that is affordable and appropriate to their circumstances. We look forward to working constructively with Ms Court to strengthen consumer outcomes,” Klipin said, noting Court’s experience in regulation and oversight.

“Ms Court has a strong track record on consumer protection and market integrity, and her focus on fair and transparent outcomes for insurance customers aligns with the work brokers do every day.”

For the insurance sector, Court’s appointment is being viewed as a continuation of ASIC’s existing regulatory direction rather than a shift in approach.

Court is also set to become the first woman to chair ASIC. Prior to joining the regulator, she served as a commissioner at the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and worked as a senior lawyer at the Australian Government Solicitor.

NIBA also acknowledged the outgoing ASIC chair, Joe Longo, who is set to conclude his term on May 31, 2026.

“We thank Mr Longo for his engagement with the profession and wish him well in his future endeavours,” Klipin said.

NIBA said it would continue to work with government and regulators on matters affecting the insurance market, including access, competition and the role of professional advice.
