ANZIIF and Unicorn Simulations have launched a new virtual training program for early-career underwriters and insurance professionals looking to build stronger decision-making skills in a live underwriting setting.

The Underwriting DNA Insurance Simulation will be held across two half-day sessions on May 7 and May 14 from 9:00am to 12:00pm (AEST), with participants earning six CIP points. The program places participants in a competitive insurance environment where they make real-time underwriting decisions across multiple classes of business, showing how those choices affect profitability, performance and risk as events unfold.

The program is aimed at underwriters with up to three years of experience, as well as people in roles such as claims and operations who want a broader understanding of how underwriting works in practice.

ANZIIF said the simulation is meant to shift the focus away from handling one risk at a time and towards managing a wider portfolio. Participants are asked to weigh growth, profitability, customer outcomes and risk appetite while responding to changing market conditions.

The training covers pricing, limits, reinsurance, expense management and key measures such as ROCE, renewal rates and market share. It also uses team-based scenarios to help participants connect underwriting decisions to broader business and customer outcomes.

According to ANZIIF, the program is based on real-world data and has already been used in major insurance markets overseas. It compresses six years of underwriting activity into a shorter interactive format to help participants build practical skills through experience.

“The underwriting function is evolving, and capability needs to evolve with it. The Underwriting DNA Insurance Simulation moves learning beyond theory, giving participants the opportunity to make real-time decisions in a dynamic environment and build the commercial judgement our industry increasingly demands,” said Mark Silveira, general manager for industry engagement at ANZIIF.

Early-bird rates are available until April 17, with fees set at $720 for members and $800 for non-members. You can register on ANZIIF’s website.
