Prudential General Insurance Hong Kong Limited has revised its PRUChoice Travel Insurance offering, introducing new coverage elements tailored to modern travel behaviours.

The updated policy includes provisions for trip disruptions due to pet health emergencies and travel interruptions linked to kidnapping incidents.

The new benefits respond to increasing consumer expectations for travel protection that accommodates family members, including pets, and addresses safety concerns abroad.

Pet travel and personal safety addressed in new policy features

Among the additions is financial protection for policyholders traveling with pets who are enrolled in the insurer’s Furkid Care plan. If an insured pet falls ill or is injured while abroad, policyholders may claim up to HK$10,000 in medical expenses.

Additionally, if a pet’s condition necessitates trip cancellation or curtailment, Prudential will reimburse eligible costs up to HK$30,000 for cancellations and HK$50,000 for curtailments.

New kidnapping-related coverage allows reimbursement for accommodation and transportation expenses if the insured or a travel companion is kidnapped during the trip. Trauma counselling services are also covered upon return, with a maximum limit of HK$50,000.

According to Michael Han, general manager of Prudential General Insurance Hong Kong, customer expectations are shifting – particularly with the growth in pet-inclusive travel and heightened attention to personal security. These enhancements are a response to those emerging demands.

“As market needs continue to evolve, we are committed to leading the way with the launch of the upgraded PRUChoice Travel Insurance, offering market-first protections including kidnapping coverage and overseas furkids medical expenses. Our goal is to offer our customers comprehensive travel protection that ensures a hassle-free journey,” he said.

The revised plan now standardizes personal accident coverage across age groups, providing equal benefits to children, adults, and seniors.

Regulatory findings highlight inconsistencies in travel insurance coverage

The timing of Prudential’s update coincides with findings from the Hong Kong Consumer Council, which analysed 27 single-trip travel policies from 11 insurers.

The review found that most products offered reduced accident and medical benefits for older adults and minors, despite charging equal premiums.

Benefit reductions were identified in 92% of the plans evaluated. Some policies decreased coverage limits by as much as 75%, while others excluded specific protections entirely for those outside the standard adult age bracket.

The study also noted that while medical expense limits varied significantly – from HK$100,000 to HK$1.5 million – only a minority of plans provided equivalent benefits across all age groups.

Three products offered full parity but were priced at premiums up to 36% higher than standard options.

Variability remains in coverage for delays, cancellations, and special risks

The council’s analysis highlighted broad disparities in coverage for trip interruptions.

Most plans provided compensation for cancellations, with payout caps ranging from HK$3,500 to HK$50,000.

However, claim eligibility criteria and covered events – such as natural disasters, family medical emergencies, or civil unrest – were defined differently by each provider.

While delays and lost baggage were generally covered, benefits ranged widely. For instance, delay payouts typically started after five to six hours and ranged from HK$500 to HK$5,000. Baggage delay coverage was usually provided either as a cash allowance or through reimbursement for essential purchases.

Coverage for kidnapping incidents was rare, with only three plans offering limited support – capped at HK$15,000 and contingent on police documentation.

Similarly, insurance for COVID-19-related illnesses varied, with only a few providers explicitly excluding pandemic claims.
