This initiative, now available to Sompo Japan’s clients in Asia and internationally, is positioned to help energy sector companies meet evolving regulatory and environmental requirements.
The collaboration comes amid heightened attention to methane emissions in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry.
Recent international agreements, such as the Global Methane Pledge, have set ambitious targets for methane reduction by 2030, placing pressure on both producers and consumers to adopt more rigorous monitoring and reporting practices.
Insurers in Asia are increasingly expected to support these efforts through advanced risk management services.
The new solution leverages Momentick’s software platform, which utilises satellite imagery to detect and quantify methane emissions at insured sites.
This technology enables Sompo Risk Management to evaluate clients’ exposure to methane leaks and generate comprehensive risk assessments.
These assessments are intended to help insurers and their clients identify vulnerabilities and take steps to mitigate environmental and operational risks.
JGC Corporation contributes on-the-ground expertise, offering greenhouse gas measurement and consulting services, including drone-based and ground-level methane detection.
These services are designed to complement the satellite-based data, providing a multi-layered approach to emissions monitoring.
Daniel Kashmir, CEO and co-founder of Momentick, noted that, as expectations for transparency and accountability continue to rise, integrating emissions intelligence into insurance operations can help insurers better manage risk and reinforce environmental responsibility in key industries.
“Sompo’s approach shows how integrating emissions intelligence can strengthen the role of insurers in reducing risk and supporting environmental accountability in high-impact sectors,” he said.
The partnership plans to expand its risk reporting capabilities by integrating data from the recently launched GOSAT-GW satellite, developed in collaboration with Japanese research institutions.
This addition is expected to improve the accuracy and scope of methane detection for insured assets.
Toshiyuki Karasawa, executive officer and senior general manager of process technology division at JGC Corporation, emphasised that accurately identifying and measuring methane – a significant greenhouse gas – is vital for effective climate initiatives.
“By leveraging our on-site MRV expertise and project management capabilities with Sompo and Momentick, we’re delivering the robust data that companies and insurers can rely on to make smarter, faster decisions,” he said.
Sompo Japan’s director, Takahisa Nakamura, emphasised the insurer’s commitment to supporting clients’ climate action objectives.
“By offering advanced monitoring and methane detection as part of our risk management portfolio, we’re reducing environmental impact and risk exposure for our energy clients and standing behind our commitment to support a low-carbon economy through data-driven insurance solutions,” he said.
